You are right John, all governments of the world and especially the US and China, serve themselves before anything. In serving themselves they often represent the worst of all cultures values, ethics, etc.
We here in the US have been given all the evidence in the world of our own shortcomings, the Gulf of Tonkin/Pentagon Papers, Wikileaks, Iran Contra, among many many more yet the majority ignore it almost as if the state and those in public office are religious organizations and religious figures. It is ignorance in its purist form. We continue to believe our own fables and myths (greatness of our WW victories, and all Wars) because it helps us sleep better at night, but that is the human psychology condition.
Those in power know psychology and how we think of ourselves much much better than we ever would know ourselves. This is why these things continue throughout human history and why one should never be blindly patriotic or nationalistic to governments, as they never care about you.
